A Bright Early-Morning Walk at Clumber Park in December

After a full day of rain yesterday, I was hoping for a break in the weather — and I got exactly that. Early December can be unpredictable, but when I stepped out of the car at Clumber Park just after 8am, the sky was clear and the air surprisingly mild at around 10 degrees. There was a fresh breeze sweeping across the landscape, the kind that wakes you up properly and carries the smell of damp earth after a night of heavy rainfall. It felt like the perfect morning for a peaceful walk and a bit of filming.

Clumber Park always has a calm atmosphere, but today had a different kind of energy — bright, fresh, washed clean by yesterday’s rain. I set out without any fixed route in mind, just happy to enjoy the light and the wide-open spaces.

Bright Morning Light Over the Lake

The first thing I noticed as I reached the lake was how lively the water looked. Instead of the usual still reflections you sometimes get in winter, the breeze was pushing steady ripples across the surface, making the light dance and scatter. It gave the whole scene a sense of movement, as if the lake itself had woken up early.

The sky was beautifully clear, washed blue after yesterday’s downpours, and the low December sunshine cast a golden glow across the water. The reflections were broken and shimmering, not mirror-like, but still striking in a different way — more vibrant and energetic.

I walked along the lakeside path, watching the sunlight flicker across the ripples. The air felt crisp but comfortable, and the wind rustling through the reeds added a lovely layer of texture to the scenes I was filming. Ducks and geese were gliding across the water, bobbing with the movement of the waves, and their wake lines cut gently through the surface patterns.

Even without still water, the lake had its own charm this morning — a bright, lively kind of beauty instead of a quiet, reflective one.

The Bridge After the Rain

From the lakeside, I made my way toward Clumber Bridge, a familiar highlight of the park. After yesterday’s rain, the stone looked darker than usual — richer in colour — and the water beneath the arches was constantly shifting. The reflections didn’t settle into symmetrical patterns, but the rippling distortions actually looked quite beautiful on camera.

Walking over the bridge, the wind picked up a little more, sending small waves tapping against the stone. The sky above was a pale winter blue with streaks of thin cloud drifting across. It was one of those mornings where you feel lucky to have chosen the right moment to get outside; everything felt fresh and renewed.

I took a variety of shots here:

  • Wide angles capturing the bridge and the restless water
  • Close-ups of stone details glistening slightly from yesterday’s rain
  • A steady walk across the top with light bouncing off the surface of the lake

Even though it was early, a few other walkers were already heading out, enjoying the brightness after such a wet day.

St Mary the Virgin Standing Tall

As I moved away from the lake, the spire of St Mary the Virgin church rose sharply into the bright sky. The church always looks impressive, but today the clean, sharp winter light made the stonework stand out even more. Against the washed-blue sky, the silhouette of the spire looked almost dramatic.

The path leading up to the church was still damp from the previous day’s rain, with puddles catching patches of sunlight. The breeze pushed small ripples across them too, mirroring the patterns on the lake in miniature.

I paused to film the exterior, focusing on:

  • The spire framed by bare branches
  • Sunlight hitting the stone walls
  • The texture of the old brickwork, darker and richer after the rain
  • The surrounding grounds, quiet and still despite the wind

It was one of those crisp mornings where everything looks slightly more vivid — the kind of weather that makes details pop on camera.

Wandering Through the Woodland

After visiting the church, I wandered into the woodland where the breeze softened slightly. The paths were muddy in places, as you’d expect after a day of rain, but manageable. The sun was filtering through the trees at an angle, catching droplets still clinging to branches and lighting them up like tiny sparks.

Even though the woodland was more sheltered than the lakeside, the lingering wind still moved through the treetops, giving the forest a soft, natural soundtrack. Leaves rustled overhead while the forest floor glistened from the moisture in the soil.

I filmed a mix of walking shots and quiet details:

  • Moss-covered logs glowing in the sunlight
  • Close-ups of raindrops on winter leaves
  • The long, stretching paths disappearing into the distance
  • Light shifting as clouds drifted across the sky

The ground smelled fresh — that unmistakable scent of wet earth and leaves that only appears after a heavy rainfall. Every step felt grounding and peaceful.

A robin appeared briefly, hopping between low branches and pausing long enough for me to take a quick photo. Moments like that always feel like small rewards for heading out early.

Closing the Walk Back at the Lake

As I finished my loop through the woodland, I returned once more to the lake. The breeze had picked up slightly, and the ripples were stronger now, chattering across the water in overlapping patterns. The sunlight was brighter too, painting the surface with silver highlights.

I filmed a final wide shot as the wind swept across the lake, creating rolling textures that looked beautiful in motion. It was a completely different mood from the still winter mornings I’ve experienced here before — but no less enjoyable. This was Clumber Park at its freshest and most energetic.

More people were starting to arrive by this point, lured out by the first clear morning after so much rain. I felt lucky to have captured the quietest part of the day.

Final Thoughts

/This early-December walk at Clumber Park was exactly what I needed after a gloomy, rainy day. The mild temperature, bright sunshine, and lively breeze created a refreshing atmosphere from the moment I set off. The lake, usually calm and reflective in winter, had its own unique charm today with the constant movement of ripples catching the light.

From the bridge and the lakeside to the woodland paths and the striking silhouette of the church, the park looked beautiful in this bright, windswept weather. It was the perfect morning for filming a relaxing walk and enjoying some time outdoors.

If you’re looking for a winter walk that offers big skies, open water and peaceful woodland, Clumber Park is a wonderful choice — especially the morning after a heavy rain, when everything feels clean, fresh and full of life.
